"Well, it's true" John said starting to tickle me
"Oh stop! Stop! Stop!" I said laughing,"Stop or i'm gonna pee my pants "
John stopped tickling me and after awhile everyone got up to leave and soon it was just the two of us again.
Two Months later
After Maggie's birthday party, thing's settled down into a nice little routine , I would drop Maggie off at the babysitter's in the morning, go to work at Cosomopolitan Magazine, pick up Maggie and John would start dinner, Other times John would take her to the shop and I would make dinner, it worked well.
One Afternoon, I was in the middle of typing an article on Sexy Men of the New Decade when my phone rang, I didn't hear it at first but after it rangs a few more times, I picked it up
"Nicole Distefino" I said balancing the phone and still typing my article
"Hey Nikk"John said
"Hi what's up?" I said
"Hold On.." John put me on hold for a second
"Why does he call me then put me on hold?" I mumbled to myself
"Maggie, come say hi to Mommy" John said coming back on the line
"John, I don't have time to " I said almost dropping the phone
"Wait... here she is" John must have put me on Speaker
"Hi sweetie..are you having fun with Daddy?"I asked knowing she wouldn't answer me
"Hi" a little voice said
"Oh my god..John did she just say Hi?" I asked stopping what i was doing
"I think she did! Maggie say it again" John said
"Hi" she repeated
"I can't believe what a big girl your getting to be .." I praised her but i was crying because i wanted to be there when she said her first words but at least John and I were able to hear her first words together
"John i'm so happy you called but i've gotta finish my article" I said wiping my eyes
"Are you alright?" John asked concerned
"Yeah,why?" I said blowing my nose with a tissue
"Because i can hear you crying" John said laughing a little
"It's just hormones, I'm Ok" I said turning back to my article
"Are you sure?" John pressed
"Yah..i gotta go " I hung up and finished my article but my mind was still wrapped around the fact that my baby had spoken her first words and I hadn't heard it ..
A few days later, Maggie and I were home, i was trying to get her to say"Mama and Dadda" but wasn't having any luck,So far she was making noises like she was a motorboat
The phone rang in the kitchen and I ran to get it
"Hello?" I said picking up the phone and walking back into the living room
"Nikki?" the voice asked..it was Vin
"Hey Vin..what's up?" I said handing Maggie a block
"Are you sitting down?" Vinnie sounded nervous
"No why?" I said curiously
"Just sit down ok?" He asked
I sat down,"Ok i'm sitting what's up?"
"There's been an accident" Vinnie started
"Oh god..what happened?" I instantly became worried
"I'm not sure but I came into the store, found him repairing a skateboard, i went to pick up a package and came back, there was a message Beth Isreal saying he had an accident, I'm on my way down there" Vin said
"Thanks..I'll be there in 20" I hung up the phone and ran, well walked fast out to the car and then had to go back when i realized i forgot Maggie
"Oh my god, Maggie, Mommy is so sorry" I said scooping
I put her in the car seat and raced down the street, When i got to the hospital, i practically yanked Maggie out of the seat and ran to the front desk
"Hi..i believe my husband was brought here, although I don't know why?" I said putting Maggie on the Counter
"Name?" The Nurse asked
"John Distefino" I said
"Oh yes room 211" The Nurse pointed down the hall
"Come On Maggie" I picked her up and went down the hall
We got to the room and stood outside, he seemed to be asleep ..he looked so peaceful..i was almost afraid he was dead or something
"Nikki?" A voice called, I turned around and saw Vinnie
"Vin!" I ran toward him and hugged him
"I talked to the Doctor and they said he'd be alright..he's got a slight concussion and a few broken ribs,he's out cold right now but that's all" Vinnie said taking Maggie from my arms
"I'm gonna go in and see him, will you take Maggie to the Cafeteria?" I said opening the door to his room
"Sure" He started to walk away
"Oh and Vin?" I said and He turned around
"Yeah?" He asked
"No Soda and No Potato Chips" I said then walked into his room
I sat down beside John and held his hand, it was just like when Maggie was in the hospital but instead of being an infant and helpless, my husband was an adult and helpless
I must have fallen asleep because when I woke up, Vinnie and Maggie were sitting on the bed with John and John was blowing raspies on Maggie's tummy
"Oh hey..how long have i been asleep?" I asked rubbing my eyes
"Awhile" John asked
"How are you feeling?"I said kissing him on the lips
"My head kinda kills and well my stomach hurts" John said leaning back against the pillows
"Can I ask a question?" I said sitting back down on the chair
"Sure Babe..anything?" John said
"How did this happen?" I said
"Oh that's not important..Did the mail come?" John changed the subject
"No and Tell me " I said narrowing my eyes
"Your just gonna get mad" John said standing Maggie up
"No, I promise i won't be mad" I said
"Well, I was working on a skateboard and i wanted to see if the wheels were the problem so i took it out on the sidewalk an-" John stopped talking
"You what?" I said already knowing the answer
"I sorta fell onto the sidewalk" John looked sheepish
"Let me get this straight, You were test-riding a skateboard and fell on the sidewalk, I Thought you were hit by a car, i nearly broke my ass getting here because i thought you were dead, I don't believe this" I said gettting angry
"See, i knew you'd get mad" John said
"Well DUH!" I stood up and grabbed Maggie and walked out the door
Vinnie came running after me
"Nik, whoa slow down!" Vince huffed and puffed after me
"What?" I said stopping short
"He knows he screwed up but he's sorry ..come back please" Vinnie looked so helpess, I turned around walked back into the hospital room
"You came back" John said looking up
"Yes because Your My Husband and I love you besides, I'm pregnant and kicking your ass would be unhealthy for the baby" I said sitting down
The Doctors released John after a few hours, I had to promise both the Doctors and Vin that I wouldn't try to kill him, just take care of him..I wasn't really that angry anyway, I just wanted to make him squirm ..
After a few weeks, John's ribs healed and his concussion healed and he was able to go back to work, But only after he promised to let Vince test ride new boards
After John's little accident, I was even more cautious because with the babydue a few weeks away and our luck..I couldn't take my chances.
We'd decided to go into Mahattan one day because i wanted to windowshop for the baby and John wanted to look into some stores for new wheels for the shop
We were just outside Tiffanys
"Do you want to go in?" John said
"Yeah, Do you want to come in ?" I asked
"Sure" John manevured Maggie's carriage into the store
We walked in and started to look around
"Some of this stuff cost more than both of our cars!" John said looking at a diamond watch
"Yeah, I know" I said then stopping in front of the beautiful ring in i've ever seen in my life, a three carat oval square cut diamond with hearts around it..it was so beautiful, i wanted to drool over it
"What're you looking at?" John said putting his chin on my shoulder
"Nothing..I need to go get my rings cut off" I said
"What? why?"John said
"Because my hands are swollen to the point where i can't even get them over my knuckles" I said
"You're gonna have them cut up all your rings?" John said looking angry
"Well.. i have to..besides I'm not happy about getting my grandmother's ring cut off..i was planning on giving that to Maggie when she turned 18 " I said
They cut my rings off and handed me what was left in a little baggie..it's was so sad, i started to bawl in the store and John had to lead me out of the store.
It was now two weeks before the baby was due so I was in a mad rush to get everything finished..which included nagging my husband about finishing the nursery
"John,, are you ever going to finish it?" I said fixing Maggie a sandwich
"Well I haven't had time but i will" John said biting into a sandwich
"You can't take one afternoon off from the shop and just paint the damn thing?" I said
"Why can't you paint it?" John said
"Fine..I'll paint the nursery and you have the BABY!" I yelled and walked into the bedroom and slammed the door
I started to slam things around until i realized..oh crap..my water broke!
"JOHN!" I yelled
"WHAT?" He yelled back
"COME HERE" I yelled
"WHAT? SO YOU CAN YELL AT ME..IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN" He shouted back
"ALRIGHT ..BUT I'M GONNA HAVE THIS BABY ON THE FLOOR.." I yelled knowing he would come
and he did..running ..he almost slid on the carpet
"Are you serious?" He said his eyes bugging out ofhis head
"Yeah..apparently the baby wants to join our argument" I said laughing a little
"We gotta go, we gotta go!" John started rushing around
"Whoa! Whoa! slow down..what are you doing?" I asked watching him go through the dresser drawers
"We gotta pack a suitcase, why didn't you pack a suitcase?"He asked frantically
"I did .it's been in the car for like a month" I said walking into the living room
"Right well let's go to the hospital.." John said opening the door
"Wait what about Maggie?" I said
"Who?" John was so panic-stricken
"Your daughter?" I said sitting on the couch
"Why are you sitting?" John said
"Because it'll awhile and your making me nervous..OOo god!" I said as the contracts started
"Let's go!" John picked me up and practically ran outside
"Will you put me DOWN?" I said just outside the door
"Nik..we gotta go!" John said putting me down
"What about Maggie?" I said
"Vince is coming over, so he can watch her" John opened the car door
"We can't leave until he comes" I said sitting on the porch
Just then Vin pulled up in his truck
"Hi!" I said trying to get up
"Hey what's going on?" Vin asked getting out of the truck
"She's having the baby..go watch Maggie" John said
"I don't understand..When Maggie was born..you didn't flip out this much" I said getting into the Jeep
"Because when you went into labor, i was on the other side of Mahattan" John said slamming the car door and ran around the other side of the car
"Oh right" I said turning on the radio and flipping around to find a station
"I can't believe this ..You're having a baby, why aren't you freaking out?"John said racing down the highway
"Because I know you are freaked out enough for both of US..whoa! oh my god!" I yelled as the contractions started again
"HOLD ON!" John put his foot to the gas
"We are SO getting a ticket!" I said gripping the door handle
Well We managed to get to the hospital in one piece.. barely
John wouldn't let me walk and refused to leave me alone long enough to go get a wheelchair so he picked me up like I was Debra Winger and He was Richard Gere from An Officer and Gentleman
"MY WIFE'S HAVING A BABY" He yelled running through the emergency room
"Ok ok put me down now!" Isaid
"No! not until we find a nurse!" John insisted then ran over to a nurse's station
"Um..can I help you?" A Nurse asked trying not to laugh
"My wife's having a baby!" John said
"Ok we'll get her check in and up to Maternity but you have to put her down first" The nurse said pulling out a wheelchair
John put me down and i sat down
"We'll have an orderly take your wife upstairs while you fill out the paper work" The nurse signaled to a young guy
"Ok..i love you" John said kissing me
"I love you too" I said then the orderly brought me to the elevator and brought me to a hospital room
I put on a hospital gown and got into bed, a nurse came in a few minutes later and started to put an IV in
"Is it too early for an epidural?" I asked, watching her with the needle
"I'm afraid so"She said finishing up,"So Is this your first baby?"
"No I have a daughter, who's one and a half" I said
"Wow..Do you know what your having now?" The Nurse asked adjusting the IV tube
"A boy but i'm haven't told my husband yet.i wanted to surprise him" I said
"Nikk?" John's voice called, then suddenly he appeared in the door
"Hi Honey" I said
"So what's the verdict?" John asked
"We're having the baby tonight!" I said leaning back on the pillows
"Oh wow" John pulled up a chair,"We should figure out some names"
"Right..like what?" I asked picking up the baby name book
"Jake, Maybe Anothony if he's a boy" John suggested taking the book from my hands
"I like Jake but i think Anothony sounds too Brooklyn " I said crinkling my nose
"Ok how about Mike?" John said
"Michael?.. Ok maybe..what about girls names?" I said
"Jessica or Ashley?" John said
"Are we raising babies or future singers of America" I said
"Well..what do you suggest" John said looking through the book
"Kasey for a girl, maybe Bailey for a boy?' I said
"I like Bailey,..I got... it if it's a girl..Sierra " John said tossing the book on the bed
"Like the soda?" I asked
"Well No.." John asked
A nurse came in and checked to see how far dilated i was
"Hey folks, get ready..this baby's coming!" The nurse said taking off her rubber gloves
"Whoa..what?" John jumped up
"I've only been in labor for," I checked my watch" A half hour"
"Well this baby wants out" The nurse said shoving John out of the room so he could change into Hospital scrubs
"This is so amazing..I've hardly had any contractions" I said smiling
"Oh just you wait" the Nurse said leaving
two orderlys came in the room with a long gurney and one of them told me to "Hop on" and wheeled me into the delivery room
"Ooo god!!!" I said as the contractions started one right after another
"I guess thinking about a painless birth approach was the wrong idea" the nurse who'd checked me laughed
Just then a guy wearing a face mask came in and stood over me
"Who the hell are you?" I said
"Nik..it's me" John said pulling down the mask
"Oh god..you scared the crap out me!" I said laughing
"Ok folks, are we ready to have a baby?" the doctor said
"Yes oOOo GOD! !" The contractions were killing me
"Ok take a deep breathe and push!" the doctor ordered
Over the next few hours, I was in so much pain, that i didn't realized I grabbed John's hand until i saw his face turned bright red
"OooOoo god!" We both yelled
"What are you yelling for?" I asked
"Your breaking my hand" John said switching hands
"Alright, One more giant push and you'll have a baby!" the Doctor said
"John, I have to tell you something?" I panted
"What?" John leaned forward
"It's a boy..we're having a boy" I said
"I'm sorry..i must have misunderstood..did you say we're having a boy?" John's eyes lit up
"Yes" I said, watching the tears form in his eyes
"OK People..in a second, there will be a third cryer" the Doctor said
"One more and that's it" I said completely exhausted,"ARGGG!!!
Suddenly I heard a tiny wail
"Congratulations! It's a boy!" The Doctor said holding up the baby
"Oh my god!" John said,"Holy shit"
The nurse handed John the baby after he was cleaned up and wrapped in a little blue blanket with a blue hat
"Say Hi to mommy" John said sitting on the bed with the baby
The baby had dark brown hair and blue eyes and boy was he a screamer!
Bailey Jacob Distefino was born on April 5th at 7:50 pm weighing 8lbs and was 22inches long
We were moved into a private room, where Baby Bailey finally stop screaming.
"I can't believe we have a son!" John said sitting onthe bed with us
"I can't believe the set of lungs on this kid"I said holding the baby
"How long did you know we were having a boy?"John asked playing with Bailey's little fist
"Not long" I said looking down at the Baby
"Nicole..How long" John said
"Six months" I said looking up at him
"Six months?!" John exclaimed
"Sshh!" I hushed him
John insisted to the head nurse that he would be staying in my hospital room and that his son was to remain with us at all times, she finally relented after he made a scene and security was called.
"John, why don't you call everyone and tell them about the baby" I said a few hours after his temper tantrum
"I did and both our moms are on their way down here, I also called Vince to check on Maggie, they were going to the park and maybe rent a movie" John said sitting in the chair
"I hope he's not giving her soda" I said
"I wouldn't worry about it" John stood up and walked over to the bassinet where Bailey was sleeping
"Oh John, careful, he's finally asleep" I said protectively
"I just want to look " John said then started to rub Bailey's little fingers
Bailey sighed and turned over
"I think he likes us" John said laughing a little,"Oh i have a surprise for you"
"Really?" I said
"Yeah..here you go" John pulled out a large bag
I dumped the bag on the bed and found four colored ring boxes
"What did you do?" I said
"Start with the black one" John said then sat down on the bed next to me
I opened it and found my grandmother's ring, one of the one's i had cut off because i couldn't get it off my finger , it was whole again
"Oh my god! John!" I said hugging him
"Keep going" John smiled
I opened the next box, a red one and inside was my engagement ring, i had it cut off also but now it was fixed, So was my clatter ring and my NYU class ring .
I picked up the last box
"I only had four rings, John where did this box come from?" I asked
"Well..open it and find out " John said
I opened and found the most gorgous diamond ring i'd ever seen, it was the exact same ring i saw in Tiffany's, with two more diamonds on both sides of the band
"Oh my god!" I started to cry
"Do you like it?" John said smiling
"I love it!" I said throwing my arms around his neck, He took the ring out of the box and put it on my finger
"How did you know?" I said staring at the rock on my finger
"I saw you drooling in the store" John said," When i went to buy it, i had two extra diamonds put in, One for Maggie and One for Bailey"
"You are so Sweet" I said kissing him
"Hey Hey none of that, that's what got you here in the first place" A nurse said coming in
"Sorry" We both said
"Hey Big Fella..how you doing?" The nurse asked Bailey, then changed his diaper
"Nurse, before you go..When can we take our Son home?" John asked."That sounds so weird..Our Son"
"Unless the Doctor says otherwise, I don't see why you can't be released tomorrow:"The Nurse answered then left the room
"Oh wow..tomorrow?!..John nothing's finished, the nursery hasn't been painted, the crib hasn't been set up..we haven't even told Maggie about Bailey..what are we going to do?"I said panicking
"I'll do everything Don't worry and that part about tell Mags about Bailey, we won't have to because where she's so little, she won't understand" John said
"Well then you'd better get going" I said
"I don't wanna leave you and the baby though," John said holding my hand
"We'll be fine..Go.." I insisted
"Alright..Do you need anything?" John asked
"Well..i need some clothes for tomorrow, the one's i packed don't look right..maybe a pair of sweatpants and a tank top, Also that blue blanket We bought and left on the living room couch?" I asked
"Sure..I love you" John kissed me on the head then walked over to the baby
"I love you too"
"And you big guy, I love you too" John kissed the baby and left
I looked around and then went over to the baby
"Hi Bailey" I said then picked him up and he immediately started to cry
"It's ok baby it's ok, don't cry shh" I tried to comfort him but he wasn't having it
I brought him over to the bed and put him down, i grabbed a toy bunny we had brought with us and tried to distract Bailey with it but it wasn't working
"Hmm, your not Hungry and you've had your diaper changed, what's the matter?" I asked him
I remembered something Stacey told me when Ali was born and she was colicky, it was a trick, she used to rub Ali's tummy with her two fingers and that seemed to calm her down, I figure if it worked with her..why wouldn't it work with him?
Well that backfired and he cried harder, I put on the radio and tuned it to a station, Britney Spears's new song was playing

For some reason, that made Bailey stop crying, and once the song ended he started to wail again, I tried to sing it again but had a problem remembering the words so i just made up the words to the beat and he fell asleep
"That's it, go to sleep" He looked so angelic, I guess I must have fallen asleep holding Bailey because i felt someone trying to take the him from me, I opened my eyes and saw it was a nurse
"Please, can't he just stay here" I pleaded with the nurse
She nodded and left, I looked down and realized he was awake and trying to look around
